Every respectable parent wants what is best for their children, even if that means putting their personal dreams on hold. Unfortunately, parents can negatively affect their children through, not only their actions, but also their beliefs onto how to achieve their dreams. The damaging effects of parents chasing unrealistic dreams, such as the American Dream, can be seen through their children and how they chase their own dreams. Biff Loman of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and Walter Younger of A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry watch their parents fight for their dreams only to become a failure, Biff is pulled into his father’s delusional dreams of success and Walter lacks the proper role models to shape his dreams around,†¦show more content†¦Unfortunately, Walter fails to see these role models are of not use to him due to his race. The American Dream is designed for white men and Walter is a black man. Walter combines his views on Big Walter and the you ng white men he sees on the town to formulate an unrealistic dream that he can be as successful as he wants to be. The Younger family scrapes through life, each person searching for their own version of the American Dream. Walter clings to the original American Dream of being successful, even if that means going against his mother’s wishes. Mama wants a house for her family, this dream causes her to not fully support Walter’s dream. Walter holds on to his dream of being successful and nothing less, however Mama only wants a home for her family, meaning â€Å"Her dream is unacceptable to Walter, who will have nothing less than the complete American Dream, since her version of it only amounts to surviving, not living in the fullest sense† (Washington 94). Their dreams are so different and Mama struggles to support Walter’s risky dream of becoming successful through opening a liquor store. Finally out of the goodness of her heart, Mama gives him the remaining part of the insurance money to start his business, however Walter loses this money to a dirty friend. Thus causing pain to not only himself, but also his family. My Philosophy of Education I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside. Give them a sense of pride...These lyrics from The Greatest Love of All sung by Whitney Houston more than 15 years ago have become almost trite. However, in simplified terms those lyrics sum up my philosophical attitude toward teaching and clarify for me why I want to teach, specifically elementary education. The future of any generation belongs to the children of that generation. The present is all we have to assist the decision makers of tomorrow how to shoulder that responsibility with earnestness, wonderment, and a sense of pride. On the other hand, Mackey spoke highly of Whole Foods, his own company. Mackey clearly gave erbal statements about his feelings that indicated his opinion of Wild Oats and Whole Foods. By posting his opinionated and negative comments in Yahoo Finance for nearly eight years, Mackey showed and told of his behavioral intentions (B, Behavioral intentions) to â€Å"destroy† Wild Oats.Mackey showed his attitude scale (C, Cognition) by implying that Wild Oats was a poorly run company and that his company, Whole Foods was the company he frequented, purchased stock in, and agreed with their mission and values. In terms of instrumental values, Mackey’s blogging behavior relative to the Wild Oats cquisition could be seen as courageous, ambitious, and independent. Mackey was probably trying to drive down the stock of Wild Oats by making it seem as though the company was worthless, while at the same time trying to acquire it. In terms of instrumental values, he did not show honesty( Mackey commented under a fake screen name), self-control, rationality, politeness or responsibility( Mackey never took responsibility for his actions on the blog). In terms of terminal values Mackey’s blogging behavior relative to the Wild Oats acquisition howed Freedom(Mackey did and said whatever he wanted), and Wisdom(he was able to acquire Wild Oats and probably made their business seem less profitable to anyone else interested in acquiring the company).The FTC and SEC probably saw a lack of instrumental and terminal values with regards to Mackey’s blogging. He was dishonest, showed a lack of self-control, lacked open-mindedness of the competition, showed no social respect f or others, and showed a lack of responsibility for his actions. Mackey clearly tried to steer potential investors and tockholders away from Wild Oats and towards his company. I agree with John Hollon of The Business Management blog, when he states that Mackey is â€Å" a delusional apologist of his own bad behavior†. From my personal perspective, I believe Mackey acted in an unethical manner with regards to his blogging at a time when he was trying to Acquire Wild Oats. He showed pure High Machiavellianism in his manipulative behavior. By claiming he would destroy Wild Oats CEO, he showed he rather be feared than loved. Mackey was deceitful and would go to any lengths to get his desired outcome.John Mackey is operating on level 2 of cognitive moral development. Mackey’s behavior was based solely on what he could gain, at this time it was Wild Oats, or self- interest reasoning. The use of the pseudonym Rahodeb showed that Mackey knew what he was doing was wrong and he d id not want to write those damning posts under his own name. He knew that it would be seen as negative and deceitful and did not want to associate those comments with himself or his company. Mackey showed a lack of values and ethics and his behavior could be seen as workplace deviance behavior.As an ethical, responsible leader Mackey should be at level five of his cognitive moral development. At the stage five level, a leader would make all decisions based on principles of justice and rights. This type of leader would be less likely to cheat, and more likely to make ethical business decisions, unlike the decisions that Mackey made. If what Mr. Mackey is saying is true, then it could be a lack of person-organization fit, which usually occurs when the employee’s values don’t match the organization’s values. I do not think this is the case here since he was the CEO and could have contributed to enforcing and einforcing positive ethical behavior, instead he did the opposite. Mackey took the time to create a fake account and name and comment for many years under this false identity. That would show that these were his own beliefs and after being found out, he was ashamed of the behavior and wanted to disassociate himself from the mess he had created. .

Beginning with the death of Kweku Sai and tracing back through his wife and children’s personal lives, Selasi explores themes of family, empathy, trauma. Kweku has left his family to return to his home country of Ghana after losing his job as a surgeon, and after his death, his family must reassemble to go there as well. The surviving children and wife reconnect with one another, bringing them closer together. Selasi navigates difficult subjects with grace, and her book is emotional and compelling. - Alyson, Editorial Intern The Help by Kathryn Stockett Page count: 465 Genre: Fiction; Historical Fiction Publish date: 2009 This month, I read The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The novel is set in Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960s and switches between the perspectives of three women who collaborate on a book detailing the experiences of black maids in the South. Through their voices, Stockett paints a picture of Mississippi in the civil rights era, highlighting the racism and inequality of the time. The women in the novel are strong, dynamic, and easy to root for, and Stockett’s writing beautifully draws readers into the fight for social change in the 1960s. I found the novel easy to read and emotionally charged. I especially loved how it covered multiple perspectives while communicating the importance of listening to ones own moral compass. - Mary, Editorial Intern Laphams Quarterly: â€Å"Night† Page count: 224 Genre: History; Collection Publish date: 2018 Recently, I read the Winter 2019 issue of Lapham’s Quarterly, which deals with the subject of â€Å"Night† by highlighting how different cultures and historical epochs relay their relationships to darkness and, by extension, the unknown. By compiling excerpts from historical texts, Lapham’s Quarterly ensures that there will be a passage for any reader. Among my personal favorites is from the medical writings of Laurent Joubert, a man who sought to dispel common misconceptions about medicine in 16th century Europe and who endorsed the medical conclusion that nighttime caused hair to turn white- particularly in those â€Å"whose brains are moist.† I would recommend this magazine to anyone who inclines towards primary historical texts, especially those who enjoy discovering bizarre and (frequently) useless anecdotes that illustrate how certain ideas and entities have changed throughout history. - Megan, Editorial Intern â€Å"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?† by Joyce Carol Oates Page count: 9 Genre: Short Story; Horror Publish date: 1994 This March, I read â€Å"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?† a short story by Joyce Carol Oates. Innocent at first, the story depicts a vapid teenage girl named Connie, who is only interested in looking pretty, finding boys, and going out with her friends. In an unexpected twist from a typical teenage story to one of eldritch horror, Connie finds herself stalked by an older boy who’s more fiend than friend- and his sinister and eerie tendencies spell out a potentially unfortunate end for Connie. Joyce Carol Oates creates a goosebumps-inducing, spooky story that makes readers search for the devil in the details. - Bryn, Editorial Intern Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders Page count: 343 Genre: Fiction; Historical Fiction Publish date: 2017 This month, I read George Saunderss Lincoln in the Bardo, which conveyed one of the most original visions of a ghostly purgatory I have ever encountered. The New York Times called the book â€Å"a weird folk art diorama of a cemetery come to life,† and Im hard-pressed to think of a better tagline. Devastated by the sudden death of his son Willie, Lincoln visits Willies body in the cemetery, unaware of the impact his presence has on the cabal of souls lingering there. Avant-garde in form and heartfelt in content, Lincoln in the Bardo provides an honest look at suffering, a reminder that we do not suffer alone, and a way to carry on. - Wes, Managing Editor A Room of Ones Own by Virginia Woolf Page count: 112 Genre: Nonfiction; Essays Publish date: 1945 I finally read my first work by Virginia Woolf, her novella A Room of Ones Own. In it, she examines women writing fiction as they exist in patriarchal society. I enjoyed the intimate first-person voice- feeling seen, heard, and spoken-to by Woolf, even though this was published 90 years ago. I marked up the book so much, I had to create a table of contents for the highlights! Though shes deliciously loquacious and every paragraph is so worth everyones time, three of my favorite quotes almost capture the essence of this feminist manifesto: â€Å"I would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman.† Intellectual freedom depends upon material things. Poetry depends upon intellectual freedom. And women have always been poor, not for two hundred years merely, but from the beginning of time. Therefore I would ask you to write all kinds of books I hope that you will possess yourselves of money enough to travel and to idle, to contemplate the future or the past of the world, to dream over books and loiter at street corners and let the line of thought dip deep into the stream.† - Sam, Head of Marketing The Only Harmless Great Thing  by Brooke Bolander Page count: 93 Genre: Science Fiction Publish date: 2018 This March, I read Brooke Bolander’s The Only Harmless Great Thing, a genre-bending alternate history full of stunning prose, unique voices, and righteous rage. The novella is inspired by two tragic, real events: the deaths of the Radium Girls, 20th century factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from luminous paint; and the 1903 public execution of Topsy, an abused circus elephant. Bolanders novella creates a fictitious and fantastical intersection for these historical atrocities. After lawsuits force the company ownership to confront the effects of the luminous paint on humans, they train sentient elephants to take over the job. Readable in one sitting, The Only Harmless Great Thing ruminates on cultural memory, institutional violence, and the cathartic powers of rage and solidarity. Bolander refuses to sanitize injustice or make martyrs of the oppressed. These stories introduced me to the silkpunk genre of fantasy- think steampunk but drawing on the history, mythology, and technology of classical Asian societies rather than 19th-century Britain and the US. Yang’s first two novellas follow the lives of Mokoya and Akeha, royal-born twin Tensors: mages who work with the elements to bend the fabric of reality. Throughout their respective, interconnected stories, Mokoya and Akeha find themselves dealing with political intrigue, prophecies, family drama, new forms of magic and tech, gigantic dragon-like beings that block out the sun, queer romance, and questions of gender. (In the world of the Protectorate, gender isn’t assigned at birth- young people get to choose for themselves.) Oh yeah, and Mokoya rides a dinosaur. Humans Can Lick Too I collected the story on Saturday, October 9th in my dorm. It was late at night, which added to the effect of the story. The storyteller is a student at the University. He is 17 years old, is from Rockville, Maryland, and is Methodist. He is half Sri Lankan and a quarter Irish and Palestinian. His father is a diplomat and works for the state department, and his mother is a homemaker. The story, as told by the student, is as follows: There once was a girl who lived with her parents in a nice little town. Her parents went out for the night, leaving the girl home alone. She did have her dog with her though, which was a big dog that made her feel safe. She was fairly young, around 13 years old, so her parents told her to make sure all the doors and windows were locked so no one could get in. She did as she was told, but for some reason a window in the basement was stuck, and she could not close it. Because of this the girl simply decided to do the next best thing and locked the basement door so in case someone got in, they could not get to her. After a few hours the girl went to bed, sleeping with the dog next to her bed to make her feel comfortable. However, the girl woke up during the night to a dripping sound. She figured she had left the water on or that there was a leak in a pipe, but she was too tired to go see what the problem was. Being home alone made her a little nervous though, so she put her hand next to the bed to let the dog lick it. She went back to sleep only to wake up again in an hour to the same dripping. She became annoyed but still went back to sleep, letting the dog lick her hand once again. She woke up again in the morning just as her parents were getting h... .... If the story was told in a monotone or was obtained in transcript, it would not be nearly as effective. Due to the fact that the teller of the story was a 17-year-old male, it can be inferred that all of society has an underlying fear of people who can cause them harm. I do not believe that this story actually occurred, but the performance made it seem somewhat believable. However, because of the lack of details, such as where the incident occurred, names of the characters, and when it took place, the story seemed fictional. Regardless of whether this story has factual basis or not, as I listened, I was very disturbed and I cringed at the end. In my opinion, the performance was extremely effective because hearing someone talk about something that seems as if it could actually happen is more affecting than someone telling a story that involves the supernatural.

Psychological disorders affect a person’s ability to function normally in their daily lives. In regards to the case study of Nicole the patient Nicole is a 40-year-old Hispanic female who comes to the mental health clinical complaining of trouble sleeping, feeling â€Å"jumpy† all of the time, and experiencing an inability to concentrate.These symptoms are causing problems for her at work, where she is a finance manager. Though the information in regards to Nicole is very limited and difficult to analyze, however the symptoms suggest that Nicole may be suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder can be difficult to diagnose and the symptoms are often unrecognizable. Posttraumatic stress disorde r is an anxiety disorder which can develop from having experienced a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened.Like many anxiety disorder they may cause jumpy and sleepless behavior depending on the anxiety disorder the individual may have. Traumatic disorders can be triggered by stress or any other event that may cause the individual to develop anxiety related symptoms. A traumatic event might be military combat experience, violent personal attacks, or even car accidents. Post-traumatic disorders can be triggered by something in their past that be generated from something major or insignificant.While Nicole’s profile within the case study does not state the existence of a traumatic event throughout her past or present life, however I can only assume that she many have experienced something in her past that may have been triggered by stress at work or another aspect in her life. It is common for the individual to withhold this informat ion as it may be extremely difficult for them to relive the event because it may be too traumatic.Victims that may have experienced an event such as rape or car accident resulting in death or severe injuries may not experience symptoms at the moment of the event however they may develop symptoms shortly or later after the event once it is triggered by stress or other traumatic events. Being that the case study did not present a in depth history on Nicole I would attempt to gather information form the patient such as â€Å"Have you experienced a traumatic event recently or in your past? † This would be to gather information about the patient to that I can pin point the origin of what is causing her symptoms.The case study regarding Nicole mentions that she is a 40-year old woman that is suffering from a great deal of symptoms. According to the Demographics of â€Å"Faces of Abnormal Psychology Interactive: for Post-traumatic stress disorder†, middle age adults are more adversely affected than older and younger adults. In addition she is a Hispanic woman meaning for whatever disorder it is important to take into consideration her culture in treating her conditions. The DSM-IV states one of the criteria of Post-traumatic stress disorder is increased levels of arousal including insomnia, irritability, and hyper vigilance. People with these disorders may feel overly alert, be easily startled, develop sleep problems, and have trouble concentrating† (Comer, 2005). When suffering from PTSD and individual may begin to display symptoms of avoidance of any stimuli that is in anyway related or associated with the traumatic event. These methods many even include avoidance of thoughts, feelings and activities associated with are resemble the event. As stated in the case study Nicole mentioned that she is having complications with getting to sleep or in general getting the significant amount of sleep needed to maintain her energy level throughout the day. Through her lack of sleep she is experiencing difficulty concentrating at her work facility, where her position requires a focused mind and attentiveness. She also experiences the feeling of being jumpy frequently throughout the day which relates to being easily startled or paranoid due to a past experience in relation to her current stress levels. She may have experienced something in her past that is being stimulated by her events she participate in during the day causing her to flash back to that moment and relive this event.It is common for individuals that suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder to experience a sequence of involuntary flashbacks through thoughts and even dreams, which may also be an additional reason for Nicole’s lack of rest during the night. She may be involuntarily reliving her traumatic experience due to stress in her life preventing her to obtain the proper rest that she needs to function at work. The case study failed to explain her social life and the relationships she may have with others thus it does explain her detachment to her work assignments and her lack of focus to stay on task.Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms reflect emotional detachment from friends and family causing them to be unable to express loving feelings for them. Post- traumatic stress disorder individuals become hyper-vigilant which could cause them to become chronically un-alert to the things and events around them rendering them unresponsive. Which is another symptom that Nicole the case study patient displays throughout her explanation of her working abilities, she displays a lack of concentration to the tasks at hand and jumpy feeling all the time.Those that suffer from this disorder may often become startled easily and suffer from difficulty of sleeplessness. Those individuals with PTSD often develop other disorder such as depression; substance related disorders as well as anxiety disorders. Meaning those that suffer from severe Post-trauma tic stress disorders may often result to substance abuse and may of their symptoms may be influenced by the usage of these substances causing their condition to seem more extreme.As well as depression and anxiety disorders can in addition contribute to the symptoms PTSD raising the impact of each symptom to a higher level depending on the severity of each disorder. The discussion about evilness inside can determine on the person. If the Monsters facial characteristics were humanised then he would able to live ordinary human life. Logically everyone has the potential to become a monster; therefore there is a monster inside of us. If this so-called monster is unleashed then it causes devastations, bad crimes, murders, etc. The monster is unusual; it comes over and out as temper but hardly ever steps out of boundaries as we have been through childhood unlike Frankensteins Monster. The theme suggests that anybody could become a major act in a criminal form but many would disagree with this statement. Shelly shows the effectiveness of the Monster but also shows it has intelligence. The language of nature differs from Shellys use of dramatic language. Her use of language is taken to extremes, which emphasises the image. Her language of nature has different contrasts, at times the image is very tranquil and subtle but near a silent or crescendo scene the captured moment is sluggish.  The abrupt sides of vast mountains were before me, the icy wall of the glacier overhung me; a few shattered pines were scattered around; and the solemn silence of this glorious presence- chamber of imperial Nature was broken only by the brawling waves. The image from this brawl of nature shows hatred is captured in the surroundings. Dramatic language shows the intensity, it makes you twitch, it makes to understand the grudge but also it says crawl in my skin and feel what I feel, weep when I weep.  CURESD, CURSED CREATOR! Elizabeth also wept, and was unhappy; but hers also was the misery of innocence, which, like a cloud that passes over the fair moon, for a while hides but cannot tarnish its brightness. Wept and unhappy doesnt suggest the strength of fear but the moon hiding behind clouds still shows its brightness. Using a simile can convey the point deeply.  To personify an object to give human characteristics shows the resemblance between the objects and humans.  The pines are not tall or luxuriant, but they are sombre, and add an air if severity to the scene. A sad person gets smaller, their heads drops down they are like a pine hard and sombre. Shelly uses poetic language but in an exclusive way. Poems in the middle of chapters allow the story to move forward in time. Each word has a great shadow behind it; they have control over the situation.  The 1931 edition of Frankenstein is sub-titled The Modern Day Prometheus. The Greek mythology says that gods existed before mankind and they were the leader to heaven and hell. Zeus was the leader of all gods who had the power of insensibility. Prometheus at that time was a minor God who had less power over the world. Birthers not only framed Obama as an illegitimate president but also paved Donald Trump’s path to the White House. With this overview, learn the origins of the movement, how it spread, and its effect on Obama. Birtherism in Context Barack Obama was born Aug. 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a native Kansan mother, Ann Dunham, and a native Kenyan father, Barack Obama Sr. But birthers contend that the president was born in Kenya, like his father. They argue that this made him ineligible to be president. Since Ann Dunham was a U.S. citizen, the birther rumors, even if true, would still be wrong about Obama’s eligibility to be president. As the Harvard Law Review explained in 2015: â€Å"All the sources routinely used to interpret the Constitution confirm that the phrase ‘natural born citizen’ has a specific meaning: namely, someone who was a U.S. citizen at birth with no need to go through a naturalization proceeding at some later time. Respect the people that I loved and the people that I knew and the little boy who grew up here in paradise and became president.†Ã‚   How the Birther Movement Began Although the birther rumors became extremely widespread, a lot of confusion exists about the origins of the movement. In fact, it has been linked to both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. But did either of these two, who became rivals during the 2016 presidential race, actually begin the birther movement? Donald Trump’s remarks about birtherism have only added to the confusion. â€Å"Hillary Clinton and her campaign in 2008 started the birther controversy,† Trump said  while campaigning for president in 2016. â€Å"I finished it.† In 2015, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) also blamed Hillary Clinton for the birther rumors. Birtherism simply can’t be traced to a single source, but Politico has linked it to an anonymous chain email from 2008. She was not allowed to travel by plane then, so Barack Obama was born there and his mother then took him to Hawaii to register his birth.† Daily Beast editor John Avlon has blamed Clinton volunteer Linda Starr of Texas for spreading the email. For her part,  Clinton has adamantly denied involvement in the smear campaign. She told CNN’s Don Lemon that to blame her â€Å"is so ludicrous, Don. You know, honestly, I just believe that, first of all, it’s totally untrue, and secondly, you know, the president and I have never had any kind of confrontation like that. You know, I have been blamed for nearly everything, that was a new one to me.† While the name of the birther responsible for the viral email remains unknown, some birthers have proudly identified themselves with the movement. They include Jerome Corsi, whose 2008 book, â€Å"Obama Nation,† accused the president of maintaining dual American and Kenyan citizenship. There’s also former Pennsylvania deputy attorney general Phil Berg. â€Å"Obama carries multiple citizenships and is ineligible to run for President of the United States. United States Constitution, Article II, Section 1,† Berg said in a federal District court complaint filed on Aug. 21, 2008. Berg had spent the previous years suggesting that George W. Bush was somehow involved in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. After his lawsuit about Obama’s birthplace came others. Alan Keyes, who ran against Obama in the 2004 Senate race and later for president, filed a suit in California concerning Obama’s eligibility to be president. California resident Orly Taitz would file more suits. New Jersey resident Leo Donofrio filed such a suit as well. The courts have ultimately  dismissed all suits involving the birther claims. How Birthers Have Affected Obama In response to the birther claims, Obama has released his birth certificate, which in Hawaii is a certificate of birth. But birthers, including Donald Trump, insisted that the certificate was invalid. Hawaii state officials have even vouched for Obama, including Dr. Chiyome Fukino, then director of the Hawai’i State Department of Health. The doctor swore in 2008 and 2009, â€Å"I... have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawai’i State Department of Health verifying Barrack (sic) Hussein Obama was born in Hawai’i and is a natural-born American citizen.† Still, Donald Trump appeared on a number of television programs questioning the authenticity of Obama’s birth certificate and suggesting that no hospital records of his birth in Hawaii could be found. His wife,  Melania Trump, made such  claims on television as well. Spreading the birther claims earned Trump a following among Americans aggrieved that Obama was president. According to polls, more than a quarter of Americans believed Obama was not born in the United States because of the controversy. After years of declaring otherwise, Trump finally admitted that Obama was a U.S. citizen. While stumping for Hillary Clinton in September 2016, First Lady Michelle Obama called the birther claims â€Å"hurtful, deceitful questions, deliberately designed to undermine [Obama’s] presidency.†

My mom owned a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder that she didn’t really use, usually just my step dad would use it to go to work and my mom used the truck so I didn’t see a problem with them riding together one morning so I can have the car for myself for the day. One morning during the beginning of the week my step dad had set the key down on the table and it was just a key so I could have easily took it and have everyone else think he misplaced it. For two days straight my parents was looking for the key and I acted as though I had no idea of what they was looking for but he just used the spare key. The third day I woke up and I looked out my window and I saw the car outside knowing I still had the stolen key under my mattress. I was a little too anxious because I knew I had the car to myself and I couldn’t get caught for taking it. It was around eleven o’clock when I got up and went get in the car. A free adventure I took and I thought I was a grown driver driving on the road with other drivers but I wasn’t it was very illegal but I didn’t care†¦ I felt cool. An hour went by and I traveled all over Destrehan I felt like my cool patch should have been given to me that day because it took a lot out of me to do something that crazy. I arrived back to my place without being stopped by the police or pulling up to the truck in the driveway, I felt so bad even hammer couldn’t touch me. My step dad always parked the car really close to the end of the driveway so that was my goal to do, I pulled in, parked the car, and got out. Then I realized I wasn’t close enough and they would have notice something funny. So I decided to get back in the car and park it correctly. Backing up I didn’t notice that I was that far away so I pushed on the gas because our driveway was more of a hill so I needed a little help getting up there. When I pushed the gas I went to fast and had hit the trash can that was in front the house, I thought it was funny and didn’t really worry about it because I could have switched it out with someone else’s. I got out and I noticed I parked the car correctly so that was a good thing but when I walked towards the trash can I heard some noise behind it and I saw that the front window was shattered, that’s when I realized things just got real. I started to panic and come up with lies to explain the window since the car didn’t look damage. My friend Shawn came outside and stared making fun of me because he knew I was going to get in trouble. As he walked in my house to go get something to drink he noticed something that I should have took a look at. His exact words were â€Å" umm Laci I think you should come take a look at this† I know I was inside but I couldn’t understand why I could see outside, that’s when I knew I was dead but I still felt cool for some reason. Explaining this to my mom wasn’t easy at all so I stayed a few feet away from her. When my step dad arrived home he did a little bit more investigation and saw that not only did I brake the trash can, the window, and ran the car through the wall but I also smashed the hose pipe that was connected to the house inside the bricks so there was no water in the house at all. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Oil and gas production, drilling, and trading is a big issue in the United States. Currently, much of the oil we use comes from foreign sources. Many argue that we should reduce foreign oil dependency by reducing our consumption and by drilling for oil right here in the U. S. For approximately forty years, a debate has been brewing about oil exploration and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is 19,000,000 acres of land in northern Alaska, a U. S. state. It is the largest protected wilderness in the United States and was created by Congress under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) of 1980†³ (Wikipedia Foundation, Inc) More specifically, within the ANWR, a 1,500,000 acre area located between the Beaufort Sea(northern border), Brooks Range (southern border), and the Prudhoe Bay (western border) is the center of controversy. This area is commonly referred to as section 1002 because when the ANILCA was created, in section 1002 of the document, the decision of how to manage oil and gas exploration and development for this area was tabled. Wikipedia Foundation, Inc. ) There are various opinions with points for and against oil drilling in the ANWR's section 1002. At this point, I am against it. I recently read a quote by U. S. , President, Barak Obama in Wikipedia. It states, â€Å"In a League of Conservation Voters questionnaire, Obama said, â€Å"I strongly reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge because it would irreversibly damage a protected national wildlife refuge without creating sufficient oil supplies to meaningfully affect the global market price or have a discernible impact on US energy security. † (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc)I have to say, I agree with President Obama 100%. This area is true wilderness. According to the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it is the most diverse ecosystem in northern Alaska. It is home to many Native Indian tribes, a l arge population of porcupine caribou, some large whales, and other smaller animals not popular elsewhere. Not to mention, it is on the coastal line of Alaska, which opens it up huge varieties of marine life and migrating birds from all over. Many people don't realize that oil drilling is big business. It will not only require oil drilling equipment and stations, but there will be roads, airports, housing, shopping, etc.This means much of the land will forever be affected. Many animal habitats and natural migratory and breeding patterns may be disrupted. The air and water will be polluted from vehicle traffic, the oil drilling itself, and many other human behaviors. Human waste will need to be dealt with. You name it, it will be a problem. Another concern is the potential for accidental pollution. As a matter of fact, in 1989, there was a bill on the table and it looked like it might make it through the Senate, to allow the drilling, when the infamous Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska.It was the largest spill of its kind where 260,000 to 750,000 barrels of crude oil spilled out of the tanker and into the surrounding waters, killing and injuring countless wildlife and destroying their habitats. (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc) Lastly, experts are not even sure how much oil is even there. A U. S. Geological Survey published in 1998 stated there was between 5. 7 billion barrels to 16 billion barrels of recoverable oil and natural gas liquids the ANWR's coastal plain area.
